What Is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is becoming more and more popular as a qualification for adults who work with young people, and we’re getting more and more demand for our Youth Mental Health First Aid Courses in Cumbria.

It’s about responding to acute mental health problems and helping people going through poor mental health. It’s a lot like standard adult and paediatric First Aid courses, but with a focus on mental health, rather than physical health and injury.

It’s about Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Mental Health Awareness, and many other things.

In other words, Mental Health First Aid is about responding to things like psychosis, depression, and anxiety in the same way that physical first aiders might respond to choking, bleeding, or broken bones.

Did you know that a young person who self-harms is roughly fifty times more likely to complete suicide?

Did you know that there are around six thousand completed suicides a year and between ten and twenty five times as many incomplete suicide attempts?

Did you know that suicide is the leading cause of death for young men between the ages of fifteen and forty?

Did you know that the majority of statistics around young people’s mental health are moving in the wrong direction at an alarming rate?

None of this makes for pleasant reading, but there is good news. You can be trained to recognise the warning signs for things like depression, suicide, and self-harm, and you can be trained to respond in a constructive way and to know where to get help.

Did you also know that early intervention is one of the most important factors in successful recovery from mental ill health. Early intervention is about things being picked up early, and that’s about having people on the ground who know what to look for and know how to respond. You can be one of those people.

We are licensed by MHFA England to deliver their two day Youth MHFA course, as well as their one day and half day courses.

Mental Health First Aid is about knowing how to approach and assess a young person at risk. It’s about knowing how to talk to them in a constructive and helpful way. It’s about knowing what certain signs and symptoms mean, and it’s about knowing how to be that first point of contact; that first response.

Mental Health First Aiders aren’t psychiatrists or therapists. Just as physical first aiders aren’t paramedics or doctors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do a lot to help.
